Acupuncture for Dysmenorrhea Menstrual Cramps

Acupuncture for Dysmenorrhea (Menstrual Cramps)

Dysmenorrhea is painful menstruation that occurs before, during or after menstruation. The cramping usually occurs in the lower abdomen; however, it can occur in the lower back or running down the legs. In severe cases, there is nausea and vomiting, sometimes dizziness. It is caused by high levels of prostaglandin hormones produced by the uterus effecting abnormal muscle contractions that cut off blood flow in the uterus.

How does acupuncture work for Dysmenorrhea (Menstrual Cramps)?

Acupuncture treatment has been recommended by the National Institutes of Health for dysmenorrheal. Acupuncture balances brain chemistry in order to regulate hormone, and also acupuncture increases energy and blood flow to the uterus to eliminate stagnation/blockage, thus, reduces or gets rid of menstrual cramps and other accompany symptoms.

Course of treatment

Usually it takes at least 3 menstrual cycles to balance the hormone by acupuncture treatment with 2 times a week. Chinese herbs work synergistically with acupuncture.
