Acupuncture for Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, flower imageit is caused by damage to the myelin sheath that surrounds nerve cells due to inflammation, and the disease interferes with messages between the body and brain. The symptoms vary since the location and severity varies, patients with multiple sclerosis can have symptoms — muscle spasms, numbness, limited range of motion, tremors, muscle weakness and loss of balance. If it affects the bowel and bladder area, symptoms can include constipation, difficulty urinating, and frequent need to urinate. If effects the eye, symptoms include double vision, eye discomfort, and vision loss. Patient might have decreased attention span, memory loss, and depression and hearing loss.

How does acupuncture work for Multiple Sclerosis?

Acupuncture helps to balance the immune response and increase the cells that stop this reaction. Acupuncture also helps to alter blood flow in the brain, which modulate sensory information between the brain and body to speed healing of the damage. Studies show acupuncture can provide effective relief for many MS symptoms, such as: reduced pain, decreased spasticity, improved bladder and bowel dysfunction, alleviating tingling and numbness, and other accompany symptoms.

Course of treatment

There are 10-15 acupuncture sessions in one course of treatment. Treatment frequency depends on individual condition. Chinese herbs work synergistically with acupuncture.
