How does acupuncture work for Diabetes/High Blood Sugar?
Treatment of diabetes with acupuncture has been effective in reducing blood sugar levels by stimulating β-cell of pancreatic islet to release insulin and resisting the hormones which rise blood glucose. Acupuncture can improve microcirculation/circulation in the body, correct the metabolic disorder of lipid and protein, and prevent/treat peripheral neuropathy. Acupuncture can also reduce the prolonged healing time of diabetic non-healing skin wounds such as ulcers.
Acupuncture is more effective in treating individuals with type 2, non-insulin dependent diabetes, the most common form of diabetes. Acupuncture can attenuate the symptoms of polyphagia, (impulse to overeat), polydipsia, (excessive thirst).
Course of treatment
There are 10-15 acupuncture sessions in one course of treatment. Treatment frequency depends on individual condition. Chinese herbs work synergistically with acupuncture.
